Flatter and Fatter

I did cycle in to work yesterday morning and soon managed to work out the stiffness in my legs and settle down to an enjoyable ride.

There were no plans to complete the return leg of the journey, however, as a mate of mine had offered to give me a kickboxing lesson after work, which meant I would have to catch the train from work out to Hamilton.

Anyway, I hopped on the bike and pedaled the 2 minute journey to the train station, I was astounded to find that I'd managed to pick up a puncture along the way! It was probably more to do with the fact that I still had the tyres running at the ridiculously high pressure I had them at for the Pedal for Scotland event, but regardless, I was extremely annoyed. Not that I bothered fixing the puncture, of course, I just hopped on the train and headed off to my kickboxing lesson...

...where we ate tasty curry and didn't kick anything at all - the perfect form of exercise!

Victory Pint

I woke up at 6am this morning, tip-toed down the stairs so that I wouldn't wake the rest of the family, then got dressed into my cycling kit (my event number, 3353 firmly pinned to my top) then set about getting myself some breakfast, packing my Camelbak and doing some basic stretches. I was buzzing.

I set off around 6.45am, heading for George Square where I would have to register and load my bike onto the lorries that were transporting the bikes over to Edinburgh. It wasn't until I had turned on to Springburn Road that I had my first taste of the weather to come - a strong gust of wind and rain battering me as I tried to pedal along the busy road. It soon stopped, but that was only temporary.

The George Square process went along fairly smoothly and I was able to catch the first train out of Queen Street. This good fortune was soon ended when we arrived at Haymarket to be advised that the lorries that were bringing our bikes were delayed and wouldn't be with us for at least 10 minutes. 40 minutes later, we were still waiting.

When we finally got our bikes, we headed off down to Roseburn Park, which is right next to Murrayfield Stadium, for the start. 9.45am was our revised start time and with no rain or wind, we were pleased to be finally on our way. The weather soon turned however, the wind quickly becoming a major factor in the days events while the rain never really became heavy, but was always present in the wind, keeping everything damp generally being quite annoying.

Anyway, off through the cycle paths of Edinburgh, through Barnton and up to Kirkliston. By now there were only small groups of riders and I was already feeling the pace. I began using the riders ahead of me primarily as motivational targets (I would challenge myself to cycle fast enough to catch up to the rider up ahead of me) and then as rest stops (if you sit behind a rider, you are shielded from the wind and therefore use less energy to maintain the same speed). I continued this cycle of chasing down the next rider, then sitting behind him/her for 5 - 10 mins so that I could catch my breath, then overtaking them to move on to my next target.

Linlithgow came and went which signalled the start of the one part of the event that I was not looking forward to - the climb up into Avonbridge. This was a long, long, looooong climb, not particularly steep, just constantly uphill, constantly spinning granny gears, constantly trying to avoid the mental head wind that kept threating to blow me off the bike. By the time I made it to the top, my legs were like jelly and my resolve all but disappeared. A wee slice of malt loaf later (cheers Chisp) and I was back in business and enjoying the brief respite out of the wind (deep dip in the road with huge hedges on the left hand side - perfect protection).

That enjoyment only lasted a little while as the next part of the course was through open hilltops of Lanarkshire, with no protection anywhere to be seen and were were just cannon fodder for the wind. It was lucky that there was many cars passing along that route, every time another gust came along it was all I could do to stop the bike from swerving and wobbling either out into the road or into the ditch alongside it. Not fun.

When I got to Coatbridge, I knew I was in the final section of the course. By now there were hardly any riders around me, so picking a target to chase up to was pretty impossible. I was able to hop onto the wheel of a few of the riders who passed me, however. A rider would come past me and I would crank like fury to catch his/her wheel then sit behind him as long as I was able to and then miserably watch as they gradually pulled away from me, only to find another rider would soon arrive behind me (I was finding it impossibly difficult to maintain my speed when I didn't have anyone to set the pace).

The last couple of miles were relatively easy. The wind was less of a hindrance in amongst the built up areas and I knew the route I was taking and how far I had to go. It was a lovely feeling crossing the line at George Square and I was even happier when I stopped my stopwatch and saw my time: 3hrs 40mins.

As pleased as I was with the time, I was happier still when Cris and Derek and later Iain came to meet me for a victory pint. A few celebratory drinks later and I happily boasted that I would cycle back home. As it was, I managed to cycle as far as the taxi rank at Buchanan Bus station, but they'll never know that. ;o)

A good day out, in some pretty awful weather. I'm pretty satisfied with my effots today - guess its time for another beer and then a bit of sleep.

Ready!

In preperation for the Pedal for Scotland event tomorrow, I spent almost 2 hours servicing the bike this afternoon, the chain is lubed to perfection, the brakes have new pads and don't squeal anymore, the gears are perfectly indexed and I eneded up with a bike that was running so smoothly that I discovered my right pedal had a broken ball bearing or two... so I nipped out to the shop and bought myself a new (cheap) pair.

Unfortunately that meant that I had to take off my old pedals in order to put on the new ones. The broken one came off without any problems but its evil twin was having none of that. I eneded up standing on the spanner and jumping up and down on it before it finally release it's death grip on the crank (for those of you that don't know, the left hand pedal actually unscrews clockwise.... I only found that out after about 15 mins of frustration, which is probably why I had to actually stand on the spanner to finally undo the pedal).

Anyway, that's me all sorted. The bike is tuned, the Camelbak is filled and my rucksac loaded with a banana, a Mars Bar, my puncture repair kit and pump and some malt loaf (Cris brought some along last year, it was delicious). I can't wait for the event to start now.

Gearing up for the weekend

Been a busy couple of days, but good things have come of it all.

The bike came back from its emergency service on Wednesday afternoon. The end result was that it need a completely new hub and wheel rebuild. £30 later and I find myself cycling on a bike that doesn't clunk or click, seems to roll really smoothly and generally feels far nicer to ride (why did I never notice that there were problems before... I guess there may be a slight disadvantage to usintg the iPod while cycling).

Anyway, I decided to cycle in yesterday but catch the train today (to 'prepare' my legs for Sundays exertion). The cycle was good and fast, with a wee bit of rain to coax me along, but all together quite good. I chose to ride without music for both legs of the journey and on the return leg, found that the from derraileur was starting to run the chain slightly causing a slight 'click, click, click' sound. Annoying, but hopefully fixable when I get the bike prep'd over the weekend.

The weather for Sunday's event does not look good. The forecast appears to be for a 16mph headwind and a load of rain, but that actual makes me even more inspired to do the damn thing.

Rainy woes

The rain was in full effect today, which mean I got to try out my new jacket!

My Race Face Aquanot jacket cost a little more than the Altura Nevis jacket I had before, but hopefully that means my zips might actually last a little longer and I won't feel like I've stepped out of a sweat bath every time I take it off. Time will tell, but it did the job nicely this morning.

My bike, on the other hand, didn't seem to hold out as well. A clunking noise started up in the rear wheel somewhere. It definitely wasn't my cranks, nor my chain and only seemed to happen intermittently so I am guessing its a bust bearing in the hub or something wrong with the rear axle. Anyway, I cycled the bike down to a local(ish) bike shop and will hopefully get it back by tomorrow, or at least before the weekend.

Tunes

I definitely prefer cycling with music now.

The right kind of music can completely change the way I ride, but generally any kind of music makes the journey just that bit more interesting and enjoyable. It also makes the roads a rather dangerous place to be so I do try to be a little more responsible when I'm on the tarmac - I generally only have one earphone in, which seems to work OK.

Anyway, it was good to be back on the bike again today. The morning journey was fairly chilly and the canal path was a little damp from the previous evenings rain, so the going was a little slippy. The journey back home, though, was a sunshine affair and therefore very enjoyable.

Not enough cycling

Its been a busy old week, but there's been a distinct lack of cycling being done which is one reason for the lack of posts recently. I only cycled on Monday and Wednesday last week. Disappointing.

The kids have started school again, which has brought with it the general hassle of getting uniforms ready, sandwiches made, school bags packed and the kids themselves carted off to school.

The chaos has died down now, however and I'm back on the bike from tomorrow, warming up for the Pedal for Scotland event taking place next Sunday. I'm really looking forward to that one.

Just don't have the power, Captain..

That feeble attempt at Star Trek humour is supposed to reflect the agonising pain that my legs are in and depict perfectly how drained my body feels right now. Unfortunately, it just makes me sound like a geek.

As it is, however, I didn't feel like I had the energy to cycle today so I plumped for the train instead. Its amazing how quickly a dreary train ride can replenish your energy levels and remind you why taking the train is a load of crap.

1500 miles

That's me pedalled into the very last quarter of my challenge - less than 500 miles less to go. I passed the 1500 mile barrier on my way in to work this morning and I can definitely see the finish line now.

Bike was running smoothly today too, maybe it has taken me a few hundred miles and a few hundred pounds to actually become relatively competent in the very basics of bike maintenance, but I seem to have got there in the end.

Roll on the last 500!

Slow Progress

Back on the bike again and I just felt like I wasn't pedalling as freely as I have done in the past. Something about the way I was riding felt slow and sluggish and I obviously attributed this to my recent holiday and resulting lack of fitness.

When I got home, I decided that I'd clean the bike and lube the chain. I flipped the bike upside down and then tried to remove the front wheel, only to find that the quick release skewer had rusted to the axle and wasn't for budging. It took a fair old bit of effort, but I eventually managed to get the wheel off and the skewer out of the wheel and then set about the bike with a blur of soapy water, GT85, lubricant and some axle grease. I even removed the chain and soaked that in a tub of degreaser (thanks for the tip, Jimbo).

Anyway, the bikes back together again, hopefully moving a little more freely than it was earlier on and I'll have one less excuse for cycling so damn slowly.

Knackered

There's no other way to describe the way I'm feeling just now - I feel completely drained. I've cycled for 5 days though, I've not done that for ages, and I've notched up over 100 miles towards my overall target, so that's not a bad comeback after a lovely, relaxing holiday.

Tarmac Rules

It's been raining on and off most of today, so I decided to take the road route back home tonight.

Its easy to forget the merits of riding on tarmac - its just so much easier and faster than riding on any other surface - so the journey home was a damp but fast one, my legs seem to be holding up well considering its my first week back in the saddle for a while.

Late nights and damp mornings

The cycle home was fairly easy last night, but when I had to head back into work again for another shift I decided to allow the company the privilege of paying my taxi fares instead of bravely climbing back on the bike again and notching up another 20 miles.

This morning was looking very bleak from my bedroom window, lots of wind and very damp looking roads saw fit to try and persuade me to take the train into work instead of the bike, but I stood strong, I climbed into my bike gear and then dragged the steel beast out of the shed and began my journey back into work. It turned out to be a lovely cycle in, ground was damp (almost bodering on muddy) but it was nice and cool and actually very enjoyable.

Not sure what the ride home tonight will be like, however, rain looks like it will be featuring at some point.

Breezy & Damp

The cycle in this morning was a little more breezy than it has been the past few days. It was a nice change to the relative norm, however, and certainly helped wake me up after my late night return from Edinburgh last night.

I could have done without the rain shower right at the very end of the journey, however.

Back... with a Bang

I'm back!

I came back from my holidays to find that my rear tyre was flat. After some late night repairs last night I was looking forward to the cycle in to work this morning.

The journey was going well, I was feeling good, bike was moving well and I was glad to be back on the bike after my extended break.. until I picked up a puncture about 500m from the end.

I was still feeling good though, happilly nodding away to the music while I set about replacing the inner tube with the efficiency of an F1 mechanic. Withing a few mins I was back on the bike again and looking forward to my shower when the rear tyre went flat again. A sharp reminder to all of you who aspire to be F1 mechanics - before you put in your nice new inner tube, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS CHECK THE TYRE FOR GLASS!!!.

A couple of leeches later and I was back on the bike and cursing my pathetic schoolboy error. My brain has obviously been overcooked in the Greek sunshine.
